Credit Suisse has announced it will start offering private banking services for affluent customers in Japan from May, 2009. Credit Suisse originally announced intentions to offer private banking services in Japan in July of 2008, but did not announce a launch date at the time.

On the 19th of March, a new Forbes Magazine edition will be released highlighting the top 40 wealthiest individuals in Japan. CEO Mr. Tadashi Yanai of Fast Retailing, the umbrella company responsible for Uniqlo brand clothing, has become number one on the list for the first time. With a net worth of 570,000,000,000 JPY (6,100,000,000 USD), up 14 million dollars from the previous year, Mr. Yanai boosted himself into first place.

On the 28th of January, Citigroup subsidiary CitiCard Japan announced the launch of a new signature-less credit card system - a first for industry in Japan. Aside from saving time at the register, using cards which do not require a verification signature is a generally considered an easier way to pay. The new signature-free card, a CitiCard Japan Diner's Club credit card, is currently available only to high net worth and corporate users, however there are plans for its introduction to the wider public in the future.

HSBC to expand services for wealthy customers in Japan
HSBC Holdings PLC has announced they are expanding their high end banking services with the opening of two new HSBC Premier Center's in Tokyo and Yokohama. These Premier Center's target customers with financial assets greater than 10 million yen (US$93,000) and offer domestic personal and global wealth management services.
